เทพเมอคิวรี่ กับคนตัดไม้
















คนตัดไม้คนหนึ่งตัดไม้อยู่ที่ริมลำธารลึก ทำขวานหลุดมือตก จมหายลงไปยังก้นลำธาร
มิรู้ที่จะทำประการใดก็ลงนั่งร้องห่มร้องให้ เสียดายขวานคู่ชีวิต เทพเมอคิวรี่ แห่งลำธารนั้นแลเห็นก็นึกเวทนา ปรากฏกายขึ้นข้างหน้าชายคนนั้น ถามว่ามีเหตุใดหรือจึงนั่งจับเจ่า ร้องไห้อยู่ ครั้นคนตัดไม้แจ้งเหตุให้ทราบแล้ว
เทพเมอคิวรี่ ก็ลงไปงม ขวานทองมายื่นให้
แล้วถามว่า "ขวานเล่มนี้ใช่หรือไม่?" คนตัดไม้ บอกว่าไม่ใช่ขวานของตน จึงกลับลงไปงมขวานเงินมาส่งให้คนตัดไม้ ก็ไม่รับ บอกว่าเล่มนี้ก็ไม่ใช่ขวานของตน คราวนี้เทพเมอคิวรี่ ก็กลับลงไป งมขวานเหล็ก ที่คนตัดไม้ทำตกน้ำมาส่งให้ คนตัดไม้ก็ดีใจ รับว่าขวาน เล่มนี้แหละเป็นของตน เทพเมอคิวรี่ พอใจในความสุจริตซื่อตรงของเขา จึงมอบขวานเงินกับขวานทองให้เป็นรางวัล
คนตัดไม้รับขวานกลับมาบ้าน เล่าเรื่องโชคดีของตนให้เพื่อนร่วมอาชีพ ฟัง เพื่อนคนหนึ่งอยากได้ลาภเช่นนั้นบ้าง ก็ออกจากบ้านไปยังที่แห่งเดียวกัน ทำเป็นตัดไม้ แล้วแกล้งทำขวานหลุดมือตกลงไปในลำธาร แล้วก็แสร้ง ร้องคร่ำครวญ เทพเมอคิวรี่ ก็มาปรากฏกายขึ้นหน้าชายนั้น ครั้นทราบความ ก็ลงไปงมขวานทองคำขึ้นมาส่งให้ ถามว่าเล่มนี้ใช่หรือไม่ ที่เขาทำตกลงไป ในลำธาร ชายคนนั้นอารามอยากได้ลาภรีบบอกทันทีว่าขวานเล่มนี้แหละ เป็นของเขา พลางยื่นมือออกไปรับ เทพเมอคิวรี่ รู้ว่าชายนั้นพูดเท็จต่อหน้าต่อตา ก็ไม่ยอมให้ขวาน ทั้งเล่มที่คนตัดไม้ช่างพูดเท็จทำตกก็ไม่งมมาให้อีกด้วย
